President Donald Trump trashed NBC’s Kristen Welker and praised Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin on Sunday over a Meet the Press interview in which Mullin blasted the controversy over the national security conversation between administration officials on the Signal app that was crashed by a journalist and published online last week.
In the Sunday interview, Mullin suggested to Welker that the so-called SignalGate controversy is all just an overblown reaction by “the left” to a “very thoughtful conversation” and is not really a major issue.
“In fact, why are we focused so much on this?” Mullin asked Welker at one point, attempting to change the conversation to failures of the Afghanistan withdrawal under President Joe Biden. CNN’s Scott Jennings made a similar argument on Sunday’s State of the Union.
In a Truth Social message later in the day, Trump highly praised those comments, beginning by saying, “A GREAT job by Senator Markwayne Mullin on beating back Kristen Welker’s, and the the Radical Left’s Witch Hunt, on the never ending Signal story.”
“They just don’t stop – Over and over they go! Meet the Fake Press should instead explain how successful the attack was, and how Sleepy Joe Biden should have done it YEARS AGO,” Trump wrote. “This story and narrative is so old and boring, but only used because we are having the most successful ‘First One Hundred Presidential Days’ in the history of America, and they can’t find anything else to talk about.”
He concluded with a familiar refrain, writing: “The Fake News Media has the lowest Approval Ratings in history, and for good reason. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
