MSNBC analyst David Jolly said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s comments earlier in the day about potentially seeking a third term in the White House should be viewed as a “constitutional threat.”
Democratic strategist Don Calloway and GOP political analyst Susan Del Percio also weighed in during an MSNBC panel on the comments, with both concluding Trump should be taken at his word.
On Alex Witt Reports, the host aired comments Trump made to NBC’s Kristen Welker Sunday morning. Trump told the Meet the Press anchor by phone, “There are – not plans. There are, there are methods which you could do it, as you know.”
Welker asked Trump if he was serious.
“No, no I’m not joking,” he replied. “I’m not joking. But, I’m not – it is far too early to think about it.”
Alex Witt asked her guests to react to Trump’s comments.
“I believe them,” Jolly replied. “I think the biggest mistake of the last eight years is we somehow fail to give credibility to Donald Trump’s whims and his impulses, but we know it’s true. And January 6th was a perfect example. If he says that he’s not ruling it out, he’s not ruling out, then we should consider it a constitutional threat.”
In her response, Del Percio said:
He’s been pushing the envelope on testing the Constitution, so I expect that he’ll continue to do that, maybe by seeking out a third term. But more importantly, short term, we’re not talking about signal and that scandal if we are talking about Trump’s third term.
Calloway told Witt he agreed with both Jolly and Del Percio and noted some on the right including Steve Bannon had been discussing a third Trump term for some time.
“And the mainstream media and all of us on the left kind of blow it off as silly or improbable or unconstitutional,” he said. “That doesn’t matter to these folks. And I think you should take a third term or an effort at a third term as a legitimate campaign promise at this point.”
