Comic and political pundit Bill Maher lost it on a fan who crashed his monologue to take a picture, telling staff to “take this guy’s phone away and throw him out” before deciding to let him stay.
On Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democratic governor of California and host of the new podcast This is Gavin Newsom was the interview guest.
The panel guests were John McWhorter, opinion writer at The New York Times and author of the new book “Pronoun Trouble: The Story of Us in Seven Little Words”; and Rikki Schlott, columnist at the New York Post and co-author of the new book “The Canceling of the American Mind.”
But before he could get to any of that, Maher began the show with his customary monologue. Maher launched into a chunk on the Signalgate scandal that has engulfed President Donald Trump’s administration and has dominated the news all week.
The host abruptly stopped the monologue to scold a member of the audience who approached him to take a snapshot right in the middle of the monologue:
Thank you, people. Thank you people. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Please, there’s so much news to get to. Thank you. All right.
(APPLAUSE)
Well… Thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you, love this crowd. Thank you. Please. Thank you so much.
As I always say, I know why you’re happy today. No, I really don’t.
Well, I guess, you know, if you don’t like what’s going on in Washington, it was the first real true big scandal of the Trump administration. The entire national security team was…
You know, they’re on a group chat. So the Houthis in Yemen have been bombing, have been attacking the shipping lanes. So maybe they do need a good bombing.
But OK, so the entire national security team, I’m talking about the Secretary of Defense, the Vice President, the head of the CIA, Department of Homeland Security. All these people are on this. Nine people on a crowd, group chat, on Signal, which is safer than a normal, you know–.
But I have it. It’s not like it’s super, you know, okay.
And then they loop it–, so it’s supposed to be nine people, our defense te–, they loop in a reporter—.

What are you, taking a fucking picture? No taking pictures during the monologue, asshole!
