Attorney General Pam Bondi defiantly defended the Trump administration when asked whether the Department of Justice would investigate the alleged security breach now known as Signalgate.
As bipartisan pressure mounts over an apparent leak of classified information that was inadvertently shared with The Atlantic‘s Jeffrey Goldberg on an unsecured Signal app, attention has turned to whether the irresponsible treatment of top-secret data merits a criminal investigation. Senator Roger Wicker, who chairs the Senate Armed Forces Committee, has already announced his intention to expedite the naming of 2an independent Inspector General to look into the matter.
At the end of a Thursday morning press event to announce the arrest of an MS-13 gang leader, the attorney general was asked, “Is DOJ involved at this point? If so, why?, If not, why not?”
Bondi defiantly defended the alleged breach, saying “Well, first, it was sensitive information, not classified, and inadvertently released.” She then immediately mimicked the very same White House talking points we’ve heard from President Donald Trump, saying “And what we should be talking about is it was a very successful mission. Our world is now safer because of that mission. We’re not going to comment any further on that.”
She then pivoted to a lamentation of older scandals that have long plagued Democrats.
“If you want to talk about classified information, talk about what was at Hillary Clinton’s home that she was trying to bleach bit. Talk about that. that classified documents in Joe Biden’s garage that Hunter Biden had access to,” said Bondi, rehashing two of the GOP’s favorite talking points from the last few election cycles.
“This was not classified information and we are very pleased with the results of that operation and that the entire world is safer because of it,” she concluded before thanking the assembled press members.
As Signalgate enters day four of what can be fairly called a negative news cycle for the Trump administration, attention has turned to Bondi over how the DOJ will get involved. Critics will undoubtedly see her response as a clear signal that the DOJ, under her leadership, has little interest in investigating the executive branch.
