A Democratic congressman accused CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard of lying under oath when they told a Senate committee that no classified information was contained in the group chat that was leaked to The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg.
At a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) called out Gabbard and Ratcliffe’s testimony from the day before — in light of the newly-published messages which show top members of the Trump administration discussing detailed plans to strike the Houthi rebels in Yemen hours before launch.
“The idea that this information, if it was presented to our committee, would not be classified, y’all know it was a lie!” Castro said. “That’s ridiculous! I’ve seen things much less sensitive be presented to us with high classification. And to say that it isn’t is a lie to the country!”
Castro went on to spell out why he believes the information in the chat rose to a level where it had to be classified.
“There is no way, no way, having sat on this committee for nine years, that somebody would come in with that information and give us something that says, ‘Unclassified.’ You can walk out of this room with this information and gave it to whomever you want,” Castro said. He added, “Tulsi, you and I came in together. I’ve never had an issue or beef with you. John, you and I are both from Texas. Y’all know that’s a lie! It’s a lie to the country!”
