Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) grilled Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Tuesday for refusing to answer a question regarding the Signal chat between Trump cabinet members.
On Monday, a report from The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg lit the political landscape ablaze when he revealed he was mistakenly added to the chat. He received the invite from National Security Adviser Mike Waltz; and the chat also included Gabbard, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Vice President JD Vance. There, members openly discussed details regarding the U.S.’s attack on Yemen. Republicans, however, denied Goldberg’s claim that “war plans” were discussed in the chat; and they also argued that none of the information was classified.
The mishap dominated a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Tuesday, where Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe faced a barrage of questions regarding nation security risks and the contents of the chat. When Reed asked Gabbard if she was overseas at the time of the chat, she confirmed she was. When he asked if she used her personal phone or one for official use only, Gabbard was less forthcoming.
REED: Director Gabbard, were you overseas during any parts of these discussions?
GABBARD: Yes, Senator, I was.
REED: Were you using your private phone or a public phone for the Signal discussions?
GABBARD: I won’t speak to this because it’s under review by the National Security Council. Once that review is complete, I’m sure we’ll share the results with the committee.
REED: What is under review? It’s a very simple question. Your private phone or officially issued phone? What could be under review?
GABBARD: National Security Council is reviewing all aspects of how this came to be, how the journalist was inadvertently added to the group chat, and what occurred within that chat across the board.
REED: So you’re not going to disclose anything about whether you use the phone.
