Two Trump administration officials who were on the group chat in which war plans were leaked to a journalist were called out by a top Senate Democrat Tuesday.
In a fiery opening to a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing featuring numerous national security leaders, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) bashed the officials who participated in the chat on the messaging app Signal in which The Atlantic’s editor Jeffrey Goldberg was given access to a candid discussion about specific strategy ahead of the strike on Houthi rebels in Yemen. Two of the officials who were on the chat — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe — appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, and Sen. Warner directed his comments to them.
“Putting aside for a moment that classified information should never be discussed over an unclassified system, it’s also just mind-boggling to me that all these senior folks were on this line and nobody bothered to even check!” Warner said. “Security hygiene 101 — who are all the names? Who are they?”
Prior to the hearing, Warner — in a post on X — called for the resignations of National Security Advisor Mike Waltz (who added Goldberg to the chat) and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (who discussed detailed war plans). At the outset of Tuesday’s hearing, Warner doubled down his belief that heads should roll.
“If this was the case of a military officer, or an intelligence officer, and they had this kind of behavior, they would be fired!” Warner said. “I think this is one more example of the kind of sloppy, careless, incompetent behavior — particularly towards classified information — that this is not a one-off, or a first-time error.”
