Pope Francis’ condition deteriorated so quickly during his most recent hospitalization that doctors considered ending his treatment to let him die, according to reports.

The pontiff, 88, was released from the hospital on Sunday after over a month of treatment for a serious respiratory infection marked by several health setbacks.

Physicians mentioned a specific breathing crisis on Feb. 28, during which he nearly choked to death on his own vomit.

“There was a real risk he might not make it,” Sergio Alfieri, a doctor at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, told Reuters.

As the pope was discharged from the hospital, doctors recommended two months of rest and limited contact with large groups, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier this month, the pontiff caused a stir as he marked the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.

His X post on the subject was met with criticism by those opposed to his stance to honor migrants.

For the Pope, this stance is far from new. Just a few days before he was hospitalized, he went after Vice President JD Vance and called on U.S. bishops to oppose the mass deportations announced under the administration of President Donald Trump.
