House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) announced that hearings on U.S. District Judge James Boasberg would begin next week as the GOP attempts to limit the power of lower courts to put the brakes on the Trump agenda.
Jordan joined Fox News host Bill Hemmer on Monday’s edition of America’s Newsroom, where he portrayed Boasberg as a radical judicial activist bent on obstructing President Donald Trump at any cost.
Boasberg has been under fire since last week when he suspended the Trump administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 as a pretext to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members.
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) filed impeachment articles against the judge Sunday. Monday, Jordan said the House would put Boasberg’s feet to the fire as his House colleagues push a bill that would prevent district judges from issuing nationwide injunctions.
Hemmer noted Trump had been hit with more district court injunctions than any president in recent memory before asking Jordan, “Why has the Supreme Court, so far as I know, never ruled on this case of a district judge stopping a national decision?”
Jordan replied:
Yeah, it may happen here sometime soon, but what we’re trying to do is take legislative action. Two and a half weeks ago in the Judiciary Committee bill, we passed legislation which said instead of these federal district judges issuing an injunction that applies to the entire country, we think it should be limited to the parties of the case in that respective jurisdiction.
The Ohio Republican also said Boasberg would be scrutinized while his GOP colleagues would try to advance a bill from Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) to prevent similar injunctions in the future.
“So we think there’s some things we can do legislatively,” Jordan said. “And then frankly, there’s the broader issue of all these judges’ injunctions, and then decisions like Judge Boasberg, what he’s trying to do and how that case is working. We’re going to have hearings on all of that because, particularly when you look at Judge Boasberg, it starts to look like this is getting totally political from this guy, particularly when you remember he’s also the judge who was part of the whole Trump-Russia FISA court granting those warrants that allowed the Comey FBI to spy on President Trump’s campaign. So we’re going look at that issue as well, but hopefully, we can get that bill passed next week on the House floor, move it to the Senate.”
